Since I was a little fella I have wanted to fly RC Helicopters and in the last decade wanted to attach a camera to the them. Now with the advancements in DSLR cameras this has made it possible.

Fine tuning these machines is a lengthy time consuming process and you also have to build the unit! In the end however, it has been worth it and the images that I obtain from the air are amazing.

Below are some images from the building process.

Learning to fly the helicopter with a camera on it was a different experience.

I will be shooting a short film of her range to present to her clients and for advertising of her label.
Ruby and me have been working together for over ten years now, and each shoot is just as amazing or better than the last.

Here is a shot from one of our first shoots together! Her label was called Ruby Ruby back then.

I have been shooting some inspiration shots for this current project.

Below are some of the shots that have got my brain moving.

There are a lot of ways to ruin a photograph, but when you take enough photos you will come to be very familiar with a few problems that seem to recur. These common problems can be a real pain, but luckily a lot of them have quite straight forward remedies. Here are a few of the more common problems you are likely to run into and what to do about them.

Correcting Washed Out Photos

Usually washed out colours in a photograph are a result of poor exposure. Sometimes, such as in the photo below, it is an intentional effect, but often it’s something you will want to correct. While Shooting: Watch your histogram and be careful not to over-expose. If your histogram is stacked up against the right side, then you’re going to lose some highlights (ie. the pixels will be pure white which is most often undesirable). Even if it’s significantly to the right of center, you’re going to end up with mainly light tones. If you are looking to correct this, then pull back the exposure – faster shutter speed, smaller aperture etc.In Post Production: Depending on how washed out the image is, you may be able to correct it in post production. Adjusting levels in Photoshop, Elements, GIMP will often correct the problem. Even a free online tool like Picnik will allow you to adjust exposure, contrast, highlights and shadows and all of these tools have a handy “autofix” option that will fix most minor exposure issues.

What to do About Noisy Photos

Noise often makes an unwelcome appearance in low-light photos when you have pushed the ISO up. Due to the higher sensitivity to light, unwanted speckles of light show up in the image caused by heat, contaminated photosites on your sensor and general gremlins.

A little belated, but Happy New Year to everyone! I hope that 2011 is a very healthy and prosperous year for all! The big news for me is that I moved to New York City over the New Year holidays and I’ve been settling into my new life! Unfortunately, it’s one of the reasons I’ve been off the radar……unless you follow me on Facebook!I thought a great way to start off the new year would be to showcase one of my blog readers! I’d like to make this a permanent addition to the blog as well. Every couple of months I’ll be showcasing a young, up and coming fashion photographer who’s work I strongly feel shows potential. I’ll interview them and write up about how he or she is making it happen for themselves! So let’s dive right in and introduce you to someone who I feel has a great eye and therefore, a tremendous potential to make it to the top, if he so desires! I actually met William David Walsh through Facebook. He sent me a friend request awhile ago, after sending me a message on how he follows my blog and is a supporter of the efforts I try to make in enlightening young photographers on the world of the fashion photography industry. I then found William’s updates either hysterically funny or the photography he’d post simply stunning and totally on the same page as my taste. I knew by seeing what William finds to be an interesting fashion photograph, that he too would have an interesting eye. After checking out his website one day, I proved I was right. While I can admit that William is still learning and experimenting, his tests prove to me already that he has “the eye” to begin with. And truth be told, whenever I’m doing research on an upcoming shoot and I am pulling images to put together a mood board, I actually send William a Facebook message and ask him if he can find a certain editorial that I’m looking for. I’ve never even met him, but I know he has done his homework and knows his fashion editorials and imagery and that’s a great way to learn how to become a better shooter. At any rate, I wrote William and asked him a series of questions and to send me 10 of my favorite shots from his website. And here he is: William David Walsh! Truly a young photographer to keep your eye on:How old are you?22

When do you first pick up a camera and what prompted you to do so?

I picked up my first (working) camera late in life, actually. During my third year in high school I decided I wanted to go into gaming illustrating and as a result of that I purchased a Kodak point and shoot to capture images on the go ( for those reading between the lines yes my introduction to photography started with digital cameras, I’m an avid film lover now though and I work with the medium a lot ). Shortly after that a photography club was started and I entered my first competition back in Jamaica . After 3 merit awards I decided this was the road I wanted to down. Plus, being the impatient person I am I’d take two days in a digital darkroom vs painting for a week in an art studio any day.

I have to apologize for not posting more often. We arrived in New York City on January 3rd and I have been working non-stop since we moved here. With jobs for Ralph Lauren and Nike, which took me back to LA for a week to shoot and then back to NYC to finish the job, my schedule has been a whirlwind of exciting jobs and networking. I’ve also shot two amazing editorials which I’ll blog about as soon as they’re published! Let’s just say that my decision to move to New York was definitely a good one! I absolutely love it here and have acclimated to it faster than anyone could’ve have guessed I would. Before I moved to New York City though, I had one last shoot in LA for Rusnak Automotive Group. Elizabeth Rusnak, Vice President of Rusnak and head of marketing and advertising for the company happens to have been my best friend in High School and after having a Good Bye dinner in Hollywood with “The Girls”, her and I decided to do another shoot together with my models and her cars! Trust me, Rusnak doesn’t sell ordinary cars. They sell high-end, luxury automobiles of the Rolls Royce, Bentley, Jaguar, Porsche caliber. I have worked with Elizabeth over the years on various projects and since we go way back, there’s a great collaboration between the two of us. Liz was witness to my initial discovery of photography, we even worked on the yearbook together in our Senior year of school waaaaay back in 1980!!Because of time restraints for both Liz and I, we decided it was best to shoot the cars in one of the Rusnak warehouses. It was your typical space, complete with awful fluorescent lighting and grey, dingy walls. But what was great about it was it’s actual size: it was big enough to move the cars around and get my lighting in there. I can shoot in a closet, but if I have my choice, honestly, it’s nice to have a big space to get really creative in.
